Universal Beam

Also known as an I-beam, the Universal Beam’s vertical side resists the sheer force exerted upon it, while the flanges help the beam resist the load’s pressure, which would otherwise cause it to bend.
The parallel flange of the Universal Beam does away with the need for tapered washers and makes it easier to connect than the flanges of Rolled Steel Joists (RSJ), which vary in thickness. The depth of a UB is always greater than its width, making it more suited to carrying bending loads (forces applied to it in the middle or on the end) such as the beam elements in floors.

The cross-sections are commonly specified with a code consisting of the dimension. The first dimension is always the depth, followed by the width and finally weight, in kilograms per meter. For example, 152x89x16, would be 152mm in height, 89mm in width and 16KG per meter of length.
